History of Chelsea Piers
Chelsea Piers opened in 1910 and served as a docking location for luxury liners that came to America’s shores. Legendary ships visited Chelsea Piers, including the Mauretania and the Lusitania. It was a glorious location in its days and made a lasting impression on many who took their first steps on the country’s soil. However, as luxury liners became obsolete, the area became derelict and run down.
In the 1980s, Chelsea Piers was earmarked for demolition, and plans were made for a highway to be built in its place. Fortunately, these plans fell through and in the early 1990s, Chelsea Piers Management was awarded the rights to operate a sports and entertainment facility on the site. Construction began in 1995 and today the complex houses some of the best facilities of its kind in the city.
