Johnson’s is the oldest Estate Winery in New York State, and you’ll enjoy learning about its history and the wine-making tradition that produces award-winning Vinifera, American Heirloom, and premium Ice wines today.
Although grapes were grown on the Johnson Estate as far back as the late 1800s, it was in 1961 that wine production first began. Today all of the European and American wine grapes that are used to produce Johnson Winery’s exceptional wines are grown right on site. When you tour the winery, you’ll learn that this is an important part of what makes the Johnson Winery so unique. As an Estate Winery, every step of the process involved in winemaking takes place right on the Johnson’s Estate property.
The Chateau Tradition
As an Estate Winery, the Johnson Winery operates according to the centuries-old French and German Chateau wine-making tradition. The foundation of this tradition is the concept that a wine can not be better than the grapes from which it is produced.
All of the grapes at Johnson Winery are carefully cultivated and picked at the precise moment they are at optimum ripeness. Because the grapes need only be transported a few thousand feet for wine production to begin, the deterioration that occurs between the time they are picked and the time they are crushed is minimized. The results are exceptional wines proudly labeled, Estate Grown and Bottled in the United States.
The Vineyards
The vineyards at Johnson Winery are not only beautiful but intriguing. On your visit to the Winery, you’ll learn about the unique microclimate in Chautauqua County, NY. The local climate in this area along the southeastern shore of Lake Erie produces conditions that are ideal for wine grape growing. This microclimate helps produce grapes of outstanding quality, and the Johnson Estate features 125 acres of vineyards. Concord, Delaware, and Niagara are three popular American grape species grown at Johnson Winery’s vineyards.
