The Beginnings of Saks Fifth Avenue
The Saks chain operates over 50 branch stores across the U.S. but the flagship location on Fifth Avenue is a retail institution. Its history of offering high-quality merchandise and an elegant shopping atmosphere dates back to the early 1900s when two independent merchants joined forces to open their dream store.
Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel ran separate shops in New York’s Herald Square on 34th Street and decided to pair up in order to make their retail vision a reality- an upscale specialty store that sold high-quality apparel and offered superior customer service. They bought a site on upper Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets and opened Saks Fifth Avenue on September 15th, 1924.
A New Vision
Adam Gimbel, Horace Saks’ assistant and the cousin of Bernard Gimbel, became president of the store when Horace died suddenly in 1926. He had a vision for Saks Fifth Avenue which he brought to life by redecorating the store in a new design inspired by the opulence of the 1925 Paris Exposition. Gimbel was determined to keep Saks Fifth Avenue special and searched all over the globe for unique and quality merchandise to offer its customers. Gimbel not only made Saks Fifth Avenue a special and luxurious place to shop, but he turned Saks into a retail empire with many locations across the country.
